1. What sorts of student interests do these sorts of portfolios target? Especially in high school, there isn't a high diversity of "maker" interests; should we try to accommodate those students with interests in disciplines that don't really fall into traditional maker archetypes (engineering, CS, etc.)?

1. As makerspaces and open portfolios become more prolific (and an increasingly common means of evaluating learning), how should issues of access be addressed? Are there makerspace or open portfolio ideas or practices that can be integrated into classrooms with affordability or implementation limitations?

1) While I think it is important to document the learning process, I also think conversations around learning is extremely important. Getting feedback on a particular project, pointing someone to helpful resources, and discussions are all important parts of the learning process. Is there room for this type of communication using open portfolios and if not, where should those conversations be had?

1. What is the time span that youths are expected to participate in order to create this portfolio and with how much in-person guidance? Is it taught over couple workshops, through an ongoing program at MakerEd, or via web without assistance?

1) In a makerspace, what is the average retention rate of students? How many students choose to stay involved with a maker community and for how long? Of those that drop out of the maker community, what are the most common causes?

1) Although I can see the benefits of an Open Portfolio, since it is decentralized, will it be harder for people not directly involved in the project to follow? The idea of an open portfolio seems to stress individual development and seems to lose some of the original intent for showing off concentrated samples of one’s work.

1) Documenting a work process needs constant attention to make sure you have enough photos taken etc. How do you deliver the importance of portfolios to students to make sure they are attentive to keeping track of their works? 9/8/2016 03:01:57 am
- How do you see the influence of Open Portfolio spreading? Top-down, i.e. universities like CMU and Bucknell and etc saying “hey, we are looking for students with good portfolios”… but just saying you will accept them does not make them as important as SAT scores or other metrics, right? So how do you influence this behavior from Top-down? Bottom-up influence is also important, as you can equip schools with the right tools and put them in the hands of learners… but how do you get school systems to invest in Maker Spaces over say, athletics, if there is not an appropriate top down incentive?

I agree that there is much to be gained from portfolios. I am concerned that the promise of widespread use if coming from an ideal world with ideal students. As soon as we start including portfolios as tools for getting a job, or getting into a dream school, I believe some very tricky issues arise.

1. In most of cases, a team has people from different disciplinary and background. How they view the problem, and the way they solve the problem are differently. What kind of assessment need to apply to reach fairness?

Does MakerEd plan to use online portfolios in conjunction with more traditional application materials initially or encourage higher education institutions to make a strong shift to using online portfolios exclusively?
